Onward O-o-o-o-o Opray Winfrey #own

The new motto of “Live your Best Life,” is speaking for Oprah.  I’ve been expecting this for sometime now quite frankly. That Oprah Winfrey is leaving the talk show venue. She plans on exciting Sept 2011 media reports say. She has accomplished so much with her show that she probably is ready for a new challenge to dig her teeth into.

I say go for it.  Great move, quit  smart while you are ahead. I know that Oprah is not finished  she has more to give of  herself than we know.  I did notice that there was a sense of not being complete over the past few years with her and the show. Revamping, tweaking and brainstorming new ideas  etc . I can understand that this is what is expected of anything in life but there was a bit of a void there.  Perhaps she read, “The Dip” by Seth Godin knowing when to quit.

Oprah WinfreyIn a sense of being able to grow and expand in different ways and move on to something far more fulfilling and challenging for her. Besides a 50/50 split aint’ nothing to sneeze at with Discovery Communications you know the  Discovery Channel.  I am sure their ratings, stock and twitter followers for both Discovery communication venues will increase, LOL!

I have admired her tenacity  and trailblazing in this arena,  she has carved a target market all her own. Believe me her followers will go right with her.

Seth Godin

What a great and challenging match.  I love the Discovery Channel and I am sure that what she plans to do with her new cable channel company O.W.N (Oprah Winfrey Network) will be informative and entertainment television.  It seems that she will be slotted into the already running Discovery Health Channel this should prove to be interesting with a national obesity and health care reform issue on the slot. I just wonder if  President Obama, a-a-  no no way oh just wishful thinking, huh!

From the OWN website:

  • Launching in 2010
  • Debuting in more than 70 million homes on what is currently Discovery Health
  • Targeting adults 18-49
  • Programming will include a mix of nonfiction, short-form programming, movies, documentaries and acquisitions
  • OWN is a joint venture between Oprah Winfrey and Discovery Communications
  • OWN is headquartered in Los Angeles, CA

As a profession in her field,  I say she is not done yet don’t count her out. She is  just moving over a bit then again we never know now do we?

Congrats Oprah  I will be watching sometime.

Cybery Bulling and update

I posted a blog on May 16th about a 13 year old girl that committed suicide due to a MySpace relationship she developed with a fraudulent MySpacer. Here is the update so far about it.

It seems that Lori Drew, 49, a neighbor of the deceased teen, has so far avoided state charges — but not federal ones.

Missouri police didn’t file any charges against Drew in part because there was no applicable state law. In response to the case, Missouri legislators gave final approval to a bill making cyber harassment illegal.

The charges were filed in California where MySpace is based.

Here’s my blog about it:

Here’s the update:

Cyber bullying Update

This case as unfortunate as it is maybe open to some challenges.

What I think…..Refer to my first blog post, that thought still stands.

“Stop Internet Cyber Bullying”

I blogged earlier about the safety measures that MySpace and Facebook are implementing on their sites. Today there has been breaking news of a story that is very sad to say the least.

A 13-year-old girl has committed suicide due to a perpetrating hoax of online harassment by another MySpace user. It seems that the culprit used MySpace as a joke posing as a young teenage male who met up with with this 13-year old girl.

Lori Drew of suburban St. Louis (an adult neighbor of Megan and her family) allegedly helped create a false-identity MySpace account to contact Megan Meier, who thought she was chatting with a 16-year-old boy named Josh Evans. Josh didn’t exist. Megan had a crush on Josh who was on medication and the bullying got exponentially out of hand.

Click video for updating story

Megan hanged herself at home in October 2006 after receiving cruel messages, that the world would be better off without her. After this event the account of the non-existent Josh Evans was deleted.

The non-existent Josh felt things were getting out of hand and decided to write and send cruel messages to Megan to get her mad so that she would delete him off her “friends” list.

Salvador Hernandez, assistant agent in charge of the Los Angeles FBI office, called the case heart-rending. The Internet is a world unto itself. People must know how far they can go before they must stop. They exploited a young girl’s weaknesses,” Hernandez said. “Whether the defendant (Lori Drew) could have foreseen the results, she’s responsible for her actions.”

The Los Angeles grand jury has just indited Lori Drew in 4 charges against her of this horrific situation. This clearly violates the TOS for MySpace by providing false information to obtain a MySpace account. This is one of the first cases of prosecution of Cyber Bullying.

What I think…….. More and more we know that bullying of any kind can lead to disastrous actions. We never know what can set a person off to devastating measures. My concern is of the adult in this situation. Why do this in the first place, and the second place if it was felt the situation was going to far, why wasn’t the account deleted before further bullying had been written? The mind of the adult here was not too sound to speak of to have the time to do this when there are so many activities in life that adults have to tend to. Why bully a teenage neighbor ? This is very sad very sad. This is not the first case but of Cyber bullying and it won’t be the last but one thing is for sure that maybe this case will allow for more of an outreach and awareness for all intended in the use of the internet and social sites.
