Look who will turn 40?

Did you happen to see Google’s home page yesterday?  I thought it was quite cute the legs of Big Bird replaced the “L” in the word Google. Google has always amazed me with their creativity and why not, this  is what they are about, being creative and cutting edge.

Big Bird

I thought to myself something must be going on.  On November 10th ,2009 Sesame Street will be 40 years old what a history. Wow, that is a long time for a educational TV show to be airing. Talk about content and keeping up with the times.  Content is a subject bloggers  are faced with in every blog, good content.

Executive Producer Carol-Lynn Parente state, “When you turn on your TV on November 10,  “You’ll see a brand-new and spectacularly beautiful opening sequence. We’re also launching an entirely new format for the show — the magazine format of Sesame Street, which has been evolving over the years, has been officially replaced with what we’re calling a ‘block’ format. And it’s just wonderful.”

I remember watching Sesame Street as a kid. Ugh, I drastically dislikedOscar, the grouch Oscar the grouch in his trash can throwing trash everywhere. Even with that it made me aware of many things green, lol! I always thought that Big Bird was just to big for me but gave him his props. Elmo has been a big hit with the kids. I remember the toy Tickle Me Elmo drove me nuts but the kids loved em and the toy wasn’t aimed at adults although I know a few adults that bought the toy for themselves, hmmm. He brought out the child in many!

bert-and-ernie

Ernie and Bert, what pals, and of course we can’t forget Cookie Monster that blue fella. Who couldn’t love him eating chocolate chip cookies and throwing around everywhere. Brings back childhood memories.

Google hasn’t forgotten him either while using his big eyes to represent the “O’s” in the world Google for today’s home page. I love it. I suppose that everyday up to Sesame Streets anniversary on the 10th we will see some creative endeavor by Google to represent this auspicious occasion.

Cookie Monster

First Lady Michelle Obama will be airing on the show on the 10th. I think I’ll turn in for the birthday celebration. Come join me and sing along.

WTG Google! Congratulations Sesame Street!

What’s in a name?

Well up this morning @ 7:30 AM checking out all the news headlines in my Google Reader and just had to post about this one.

Adolf Hitler Campbell,  a  3-year old,  celebrating his birthday yesterday, and his parents wanted to get his name on the cake. Yes his name is Adolf Hitler the store would not inscribe, “Happy Birthday Adolf Hitler,” on the cake.

Adolf’s parents Heath and Deborah Campbell we very upset by this, and the outpouring of angry internet postings about a newspaper article written about this incident.

As I continued reading the article the only thing that kept in my mind was the child and his happiness on his birthday. He has no control over his naming until his is of legal age to change it if you wishes.

But I will go even further here the important thing is this child and his happiness and having fun on his birthday. As a parent regardless of what the world thinks that is the ultimate goal here.

I was glad to read that this is just what they did made their son happy on his birthday.

Fads….. Strawberry Quick and Cheese Part Two

Well as stated in part one. I would come and post about some small solutions to this growing menace as mentioned in part one. You can get up to speed about this new issue here @ Fads….Strawberry Quick and Cheese P1

Hopefully you have had a chance to read part one of this two part blog series about fad drugs that are on the increase among teens.

At the end of the Doctors show I viewed on yesterday there was help for the teens that were on the show. Help ranged from detox to enrollment into a drug program for the teens. Help for their families was also included as we very well know that the whole family is effected in one way or another with a drug addiction and all need healing help. I was very glad to see that but thought, what about those teens, children and parents not on the show?

I felt compelled to do something anything no matter how big or small. This is just a start I am not saying that this will solve the problem but just maybe it can chip away at it enough to make a difference.

I hope that you will also feel compelled to do something anything to help. If it’s only to talk to your teen or groups of teens about these fads that are increasing.

To let you know currently there is an act in our government called
the Saving Kids from Dangerous Drugs Act.

The act is awaiting legislative approval of Congress, and a final step of signing by the president before the bill is passes as law. I am sure President-Elect Obama is aware of this and it will pass into law.

Senators Feinstein and Grassley introduced legislation to penalize drug dealers who market candy-flavored meth to children.

California Senator Dianne Feinstein has joined with Senator Chuck Grassley of Iowa to sponsor a bill in congress that would make it a federal crime to appeal to children with candy-flavored meth or other drugs. Feinstein said that substances like “Strawberry Quick” are “…designed to get people to try it a few times. It’s all about hooking young people, and we have to stop this practice before it grows any further.”

Locally we can talk about this to educators, administrators and counselors of our schools systems.

Take this to your PTA meetings and see if they can help with educating your local school communities. Perhaps your school community could sponsor or orchestrate a program or a parent workshop about these fad drugs.

Maybe your local school system may be open to a program or an added lesson in a health class. Contact your local school principals and school boards.

Involve your local police to come and speak about it to students and parents.

Talk to your local city council at a city council meeting they may institute something for the community at large.

Contact your Senator or House Representative. I am sure they are aware of the Saving Kids from Dangerous Drugs Act.

Find your State Senators here
Find your State House of Representative here

Show your support by asking that they vote to pass the bill.

I have started an online petition (click the below image) to ask Congress when they reconvene for session, to vote “yes” to pass the act. If you feel this is important enough for a law to be enacted for the protection of our children and teens join me in letting Congress know how we feel as American people for the protection of our children and teens.

Crystal Meth petition

Should you have any suggestions of your own please let me know by posting a comment. You may never know who will see this and will be compelled also to action.

Finally I hope this has been an eye opener for you as it is for me. If you do nothing else just talk to your children/teens. The more we talk openly, honestly and immediately the better chance we have of chipping away at this new twist of a menace to society.

Talk to a child/teen they are asking for our help now.

Vitamin D=Doom for Kids!

I was just shocked this morning to read that many children in China sickened by tainted milk doubled to nearly 12,900. The government vowed to crack down on those responsible for the scandal, which has raised new questions about the safety of the country’s food chain.

Many of the children consumed infant formula from one company, the Shijiazhuang Sanlu Group Co., the dairy at the center of one of China’s worst food safety scandals in years.

Read more here:

I hope that the authorities get to the bottom of this to help those children this company has been sited by authorities as been the center of one of the worst food scandals. Let’s get to it to save those children!

Who is looking out for the faces and spaces of our kids ?!!

internet safety

Besides the prices of gasoline and food going up you just feel like you are being gouged everywhere. Especially when it comes to the essential items we need to survive like food, shelter, and water. I could go on for days about that one. But among those three basic essential items safety is getting another boost for the protection of kids on Facebook and MySpace. I for one am pleased being a child advocate this is something that is always a concern for me just how safe are the things we do in society and how that can effect the safety or our children. Well Facebook and MySpace have stepped up to the plate. Despite what the internet gossip is they have decided to do something about it.

Among other changes, Facebook has agreed to:

– Ensure companies offering services on its site comply with its safety and privacy guidelines.

– Keep tobacco and alcohol ads from users too young to purchase those products.

– Remove groups whose comments or images suggest they may involve incest, pedophilia, bullying or other inappropriate content.

– Send warning messages when a child is in danger of giving personal information to an adult.

– Review users’ profiles when they ask to change their age, ensuring the update is legitimate and not intended to let adults masquerade as children.

The protections included in the MySpace and Facebook pacts could be expanded to smaller services such as Friendster and Bebo, Blumenthal said.

“We’re entering a new era in social networking safety,” Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal said. “This agreement is open-ended in envisioning advances in technology that will permit even stronger steps in the future toward protecting kids’ safety.”

Don’t stop here guys keep goin’ is all I say!

What is your point of view?

Well we know the universe knows about this one for about over a week the Texas polygamist issue. I have debated about blogging about this being a child advocate my concern is for the children. We have heard from the mothers but nothing so far as I have seen from the fathers. Why?

There are many lawyers, celebrities coming to the rescue of these children. With the DNA testing that has begun only one can wonder the fate of these children. Foster care, adoption, placement back with their parents only God knows. But I know this that no matter what happens children will be hurt in this process and they didn’t asked to be in the first place.

Check out this news casting. I will be updating on this situation.

Here’s the latest update from ABC news about the children:
