Onward O-o-o-o-o Opray Winfrey #own

The new motto of “Live your Best Life,” is speaking for Oprah.  I’ve been expecting this for sometime now quite frankly. That Oprah Winfrey is leaving the talk show venue. She plans on exciting Sept 2011 media reports say. She has accomplished so much with her show that she probably is ready for a new challenge to dig her teeth into.

I say go for it.  Great move, quit  smart while you are ahead. I know that Oprah is not finished  she has more to give of  herself than we know.  I did notice that there was a sense of not being complete over the past few years with her and the show. Revamping, tweaking and brainstorming new ideas  etc . I can understand that this is what is expected of anything in life but there was a bit of a void there.  Perhaps she read, “The Dip” by Seth Godin knowing when to quit.

Oprah WinfreyIn a sense of being able to grow and expand in different ways and move on to something far more fulfilling and challenging for her. Besides a 50/50 split aint’ nothing to sneeze at with Discovery Communications you know the  Discovery Channel.  I am sure their ratings, stock and twitter followers for both Discovery communication venues will increase, LOL!

I have admired her tenacity  and trailblazing in this arena,  she has carved a target market all her own. Believe me her followers will go right with her.

Seth Godin

What a great and challenging match.  I love the Discovery Channel and I am sure that what she plans to do with her new cable channel company O.W.N (Oprah Winfrey Network) will be informative and entertainment television.  It seems that she will be slotted into the already running Discovery Health Channel this should prove to be interesting with a national obesity and health care reform issue on the slot. I just wonder if  President Obama, a-a-  no no way oh just wishful thinking, huh!

From the OWN website:

  • Launching in 2010
  • Debuting in more than 70 million homes on what is currently Discovery Health
  • Targeting adults 18-49
  • Programming will include a mix of nonfiction, short-form programming, movies, documentaries and acquisitions
  • OWN is a joint venture between Oprah Winfrey and Discovery Communications
  • OWN is headquartered in Los Angeles, CA

As a profession in her field,  I say she is not done yet don’t count her out. She is  just moving over a bit then again we never know now do we?

Congrats Oprah  I will be watching sometime.

I am Aware of Triple Negative Breast Cancer

This October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  Having lost a relative to this type of cancer and well before more advanced medical technologies where available back in the 70’s, I have learned so much about cancer.

It’s ironic that my mother is a retired chemotherapy R.N. and that cancer is prevalent in our family. Today I learned more about Triple Negative Breast Cancer (TNBC) mostly this condition is more prevalent amount African American women and more so in younger African American women.

I have always been an advocate for the research for the cure of Breast Cancer. Knowing that there are varies sub-cancer under the Breast Cancer umbrella it just brings to mind so many that are continuously fighting for the cure.

Breast Cancer Charity Auction Proceeds to Susan G. Komen

My condolences for those that are going through this and those that have lost loved ones to Breast Cancer. This is not only a month to reflect get involved with the fight but I urge you to not only just think during October but throughout the year. Those with cancer think about it everyday,  to help save lives.

Oh no the swine!

If you haven’t heard yet it’s time you did and prepared yourself to protect you and your family.

Video below from April 24th see further down for update on this virus.

The swine flu is stretching across countries just as fast as the air we breathe can blow.  The news is all the buzz about this and I think we really need to pay attention. As I woke up this morning to look at the news a school in Elyria, Ohio has been closed due to the swine flu. A 23 month old toddler has died from the swine flu in Texas and before it gets better the CDC is saying it is going to get worst with more cases showing up everyday and more deaths are sure to be reported before it gets better.

The acting director of the CDC, Richard Besser in collaboration with the new director of the federal government Health and Human Services Department, Kathleen Sebelius at to alerting, educating and supplying the means for the American people to get the help needed to combat this strain of influenza.

from today about the swine flu virus

Taking samples for Swin Flu testing

Reports of the near pandemic stem from Mexico and they are telling Americans unless needed do not travel to Mexico. There are some preventive measures that can be taken such as:

Wash your hands

Cover you nose and mouth when you sneeze or cough

Don’t go to work, school and daycare center etc if you are sick.

We are being urged to stay home if at all possible.

These are purely preventive measures and are no substitution for having the medication to combat the swine flu should you feel you are at risk or feeling ill.

What I do appreciate as an American citizen is that both agencies have met with President Obama and are aggressively working on this with inoculations, education, and preventative measures to prevent further contamination.

We are in for a journey as we all know there are cases that have not been reported while the strain is continuously being spread. Mr. Besser states it will get worse over the next days before it gets better. They are aware and working aggressively to get the help to those that need it.

Governor Schwarzenegger has authorized a statewide emergency for California pertaining to the swine flu. Cuba has restricted all flights in and out of Cuba for the next 24-48 hrs. Congress has passed a 1.5 billion dollar bill for the state of emergency funding to help combat this condition.

My advice is to stay updated via the media, internet as well as listening to President Obama’s address to the American people tonight @ 8 PM EST.

Symptoms of this strain of flu range from fever, to coughing and fatigue.

Both websites the Health and Human Services (HHS) and the Center for Disease Control (CDC) have placed updates, guidelines, and reports of infected states on their websites. We are urged to pay attention and keep updated via the websites or the media for status reports.

Inoculations are being dispatched to the states that have report known cases of the swine flu they are the priority right now as stipulated by both agencies. More vaccines are also being fabricated as I write this.

Listening to a new break with Federal Government Health and Human Services director Kathleen Sebelius. There has now been an report of another school outbreak in New York.

Protect and educate yourselves and may God help us through this.

OH NUTS!!!

pistachio nuts on utellit.wordpress.com blog

I can’t believe it my favorite nuts are the cause of major recalls over the next days.

Alright you pistachio lovers we have to leave those nuts alone!

The FDA has reported cases of get this possible salmonella contamination. We barely got over the peanut recalls and now this. Ooops, I had some peanuts the other day. Oh well I am doing fine thanks for asking.

The discovery in Fresno, Calif was reported yesterday, Monday.

We have been warned to not eat pistachios or pistachios products. Goodbye trail mix, ice cream and just plain ole’ pistachio nuts.

What makes me chuckle here is that they want us to hold on to the nuts and nut products so that they can be turned in for tracking purposes. Now really do you think we are going to do that, c’mon. 😉 In the trash they go talk about money down the drain.

I would rather be safe than sorry though.

Already two people have called the FDA complaining of gastrointestinal illness that could be associated with the nuts.
Nothing has been confirmed yet.

California is the second-largest producer of pistachios in the world, wow!

The California based company Setton Pistachio sell nuts, dried fruit, edible seed was voluntarily recalling a portion of the roasted nuts it has been shipping since last fall. A Setton spokeswoman said that amounts to more than 2 million pounds of nuts. Last year, what!!

This was discovered last Tuesday when Kraft Foods Inc, notified the FDA that it had detected salmonella in roasted pistachios through routine product testing. Of course Kraft and their subsidiary recalled their Back to Nature Nantucket Blend Trail Mix the next day.

Hey reader did you hear about this? I sure did. Thank goodness I didn’t have any pistachios or pistachio products. Just think last Saturday I was really thinking about going to the store and getting some pistachio ice cream really I was, lol!

More of the story here…

We haven’t heard the end of this major recalls will be going out in the next few days so spread the word to everyone you can.

This has been a public service announcement.

Be healthy 🙂

CyberSuicide and Cyberbullying

I was just floored. As I get older I think nothing can just shock me down to my toes and make be turn colors but as I live longer, I find that this is just not true.  Is is the holiday time that brings about so much strife and depression in the lives of people.  Everyone is looking for someone to love, connect with and feel a part of anywhere, anytime, by any means necessary.

Well yesterday a college youth took his life he was bipolar and on medication.  Abraham Biggs wrote a suicide note stating how much he hated life and himself and wanted it all to end. While on streaming video @ Justin.tv he video taped himself engulfing a handful of his medication while gradually the last breathe of life escaped his body while he was taping himself.

The chatroom to his session was open while people thought it was a joke, some were egging him on, some were cracking jokes. The news has stated that it may have been different if someone was in the room with him and they most more than likely would have stopped him form committing suicide.

The video stopped streaming as the police was called by someone taking an active part. When the local police got there Bigss was dead.

There is so much to this that is just outrageous, wrong and bizarre it really just infuriates me. Since when did we as a country take someone talking about killing themselves as a joke? We have schools that have no tolerance rules for kids bring weapons, drawing weapons, or even talking about weapons where they can be suspended or expelled from school.

He was depressed beyond what we could imagine. We have no idea what it means to be bipolar and on bipolar medication. Unless you have the condition you just don’t understand.

Abraham Biggs, 19, died Wednesday from a toxic combination of opiates and benzodiazepine, a drug used to treat insomnia and depression, said Wendy Crane, an investigator with the Broward County medical examiner’s office. At least one of the drugs was prescribed to him and it’s unclear how he got the others, Crane said.

Granted those watching may have not know about his condiion but to instigate, joke, poke, cyber-harass this college student is just deplorable regardless.  Cyberbullying yet again assist in taking another life. From my previous blog post about Cyberbullying.

It just shows how this menace is still prevalent, increasing and being unchecked in our society. How many more lives must this phenomenon assist in claiming a life?

Here is a memorial page I found for the college youth

His myspace page has been I am sure taken down as condolensences have poured in.

His family is devasted. Pray for his family.

Fads….. Strawberry Quick and Cheese Part Two

Well as stated in part one. I would come and post about some small solutions to this growing menace as mentioned in part one. You can get up to speed about this new issue here @ Fads….Strawberry Quick and Cheese P1

Hopefully you have had a chance to read part one of this two part blog series about fad drugs that are on the increase among teens.

At the end of the Doctors show I viewed on yesterday there was help for the teens that were on the show. Help ranged from detox to enrollment into a drug program for the teens. Help for their families was also included as we very well know that the whole family is effected in one way or another with a drug addiction and all need healing help. I was very glad to see that but thought, what about those teens, children and parents not on the show?

I felt compelled to do something anything no matter how big or small. This is just a start I am not saying that this will solve the problem but just maybe it can chip away at it enough to make a difference.

I hope that you will also feel compelled to do something anything to help. If it’s only to talk to your teen or groups of teens about these fads that are increasing.

To let you know currently there is an act in our government called
the Saving Kids from Dangerous Drugs Act.

The act is awaiting legislative approval of Congress, and a final step of signing by the president before the bill is passes as law. I am sure President-Elect Obama is aware of this and it will pass into law.

Senators Feinstein and Grassley introduced legislation to penalize drug dealers who market candy-flavored meth to children.

California Senator Dianne Feinstein has joined with Senator Chuck Grassley of Iowa to sponsor a bill in congress that would make it a federal crime to appeal to children with candy-flavored meth or other drugs. Feinstein said that substances like “Strawberry Quick” are “…designed to get people to try it a few times. It’s all about hooking young people, and we have to stop this practice before it grows any further.”

Locally we can talk about this to educators, administrators and counselors of our schools systems.

Take this to your PTA meetings and see if they can help with educating your local school communities. Perhaps your school community could sponsor or orchestrate a program or a parent workshop about these fad drugs.

Maybe your local school system may be open to a program or an added lesson in a health class. Contact your local school principals and school boards.

Involve your local police to come and speak about it to students and parents.

Talk to your local city council at a city council meeting they may institute something for the community at large.

Contact your Senator or House Representative. I am sure they are aware of the Saving Kids from Dangerous Drugs Act.

Find your State Senators here
Find your State House of Representative here

Show your support by asking that they vote to pass the bill.

I have started an online petition (click the below image) to ask Congress when they reconvene for session, to vote “yes” to pass the act. If you feel this is important enough for a law to be enacted for the protection of our children and teens join me in letting Congress know how we feel as American people for the protection of our children and teens.

Crystal Meth petition

Should you have any suggestions of your own please let me know by posting a comment. You may never know who will see this and will be compelled also to action.

Finally I hope this has been an eye opener for you as it is for me. If you do nothing else just talk to your children/teens. The more we talk openly, honestly and immediately the better chance we have of chipping away at this new twist of a menace to society.

Talk to a child/teen they are asking for our help now.

You are dying, what would your last words be?

I was reading my Sunday newspaper and came across an article about this video below that talks about continuing to strive despite the odds that you are dealt.  What resonated with me was that we can’t control the cards that are dealt in life but we can choose how we play our cards.

Randy Pausch who had cancer that was eroding at his pancreas. On September 18, 2007 this computer science professor, in front of an audience of over 400 people at Carnegie Mellon University delivered a lecture called. “Really achieving your childhood dreams.” Randy shared with the audience about his cancer and that he only had months to live.  His lecture was energetic, cheerful, and darkly funny. He was lecturing like the world was his.

This lecture video that I recommend you watch is an inspiration to the book that he wrote based on the same principles.

Sadly, Randy lost his battle to pancreatic cancer on July 25th, 2008, but his legacy will continue to inspire us all, for generations to come.
